Culture
The cultural opportunities of the city are provided by the Lajos Kéky City Cultural Center operated by Nánás Pro Cultura Nonprofit Kft. The cultural center offers language, art and public benefit courses, as well as sports facilities. The center also has a dance club and a musical club. Those interested can take part in theater performances, concerts and performance evenings. The city is invigorated several times a year by the traditional balls (carnival, Easter, Elizabeth and Catherine’s Day, New Year’s Eve and foundation balls).
The library has a valuable local history collection of 68,000 pieces, and regularly organizes writer-reader meetings, creative evenings, forums, poetry and prose competitions.
Reviving the centuries-old tradition of Hajdúnánás, the Golden Straw International Straw Spinning Competition is held every two years , and exhibitions commemorate this ancient industry. A multi-day event called Summer Music Evenings is organized annually.
