HISTORY
OF THE GALLERY

The foundations of the Dimitar Dobrovich Art Gallery were laid back in 1905 – with the will of the Revival painter Dimitar Dobrovich. With the bequeathed works the young artist Yordan Kyuvliev arranges a permanent exhibition in the library of the local community center “Zora”. Later, after his unexpected death, his mother Zoitsa donated forty of his paintings to the institution. In the 30s the collection passed to the Historical Museum – Sliven – a separate Art Department. In 1965, by decree of the Council of Ministers, the collection was established as an independent cultural institute with the official name “Dimitar Dobrovich Art Gallery” and with a separate building for permanent exhibition (“Uzunova House”).

Today the art gallery has a fund of nearly 7000 works / painting, graphics, sculpture, applied art, unconventional forms, icons, church utensils, etc./. The gallery has four permanent exhibitions, spread over three sites.
