Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Válega

The Parish Church of Válega , also referred to as Church of Nossa Senhora do Amparo , is located in the parish of Válega , municipality of Ovar , district of Aveiro , in Portugal .

History

The patronage of the church of Válega belonged until 1150 to individuals. From that date and until 1288 it belonged to the Monastery of São Pedro de Ferreira, after which, and until 1583 , it belonged to the bishop and the chapel of the Cathedral of Porto . Subsequently it remained in exclusive to the man who maintained it until 1833 .

The temple was originally founded in the place of Seixo Branco, where there are no traces, passing at a time not later than the 15th century to the place of Espinha, in the place today called Adro Velho.

In the middle of the 18th century, its implantation came to be located where it is today, with the works beginning in 1746 , and consuming more than a century.

In the 20th century , between 1923 and 1958 , conservation work was carried out on the initiative of JO Lopes and his wife, MJO Lopes, in which the construction of the current exotic wooden coffered ceiling stood out. In 1942 , the placement of the tile panel depicting Senhora do Amparo, on the external top of the chancel, dates back to 1942 , signed by Jorge Colaço’s atelier and executed by Fábrica Lusitânia, in Lisbon .

Between 1959 and 1960 there was a campaign sponsored by António Maria Augusto da Silva, commander of the Order of Benemerência , which included the covering of marble plates on the interior walls of the chancel , the sub-choir and the general wainscoting, the covering on the main facade on the interior walls of the nave and on the upper part of the triumphal arch, with polychrome tiles figured at the Fábrica Aleluia, in Aveiro , and the stained glass windows signed by S. Cuadrado, from Madrid .

Finally, in 1975, the side and back elevations were covered with tiles from the Fábrica Aleluia, designed by the architect Januário Godinho .

The temple is not classified.
