A short walk from Vaasa Square, in a beautiful location by the sea in the Inner Harbor is the Kunts Museum of Modern Art. The museum is named after the art collector, Consul Simo Kunts (1913–1984), whose foundation’s art collection is considered one of the most significant collections of modern and contemporary art in Finland. Donations – such as Lars Swanljung’s (b. 1944) collection of contemporary art – strengthen Vaasa’s importance as an art city.
The museum’s exhibition activities are based on changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, as well as exhibitions presenting its own collections. The municipality’s exhibitions delve deeply into contemporary art phenomena and current themes, providing materials for building identities and understanding the phenomena of our time.
The municipality’s facilities offer good opportunities for organizing events. In particular, the municipalities organize interdisciplinary performances and events in cooperation with the third sector and audience groups.
