Kuopio Art Museum

Finland

The Kuopio Art Museum is the regional responsibility museum in Northern Savonia . The museum was formerly a regional art museum and was born in 1980 after a period of nearly 30 years of plans and temporary exhibition space.

Collections

The collections of the Kuopio Art Museum include about 6,700 works. The collections consist mainly of Finnish art. The ensemble consists of the Kuopio Art Museum, the City of Kuopio , Osk. From the collections of Huttunen , Leonardo da Vilhu and Pekka Halonen and other individual collections.

The Kuopio Art Museum’s own collection has been added since 1981. It contains more than 800 works, most of which are contemporary art from Northern Savonia and classics of art history from the 19th century to the present day. The collection is on display in the Lintukoto main exhibition. It includes the work of the brothers Juho Rissanen and Von Wright, among others .

The collection of the city of Kuopio has been augmented since 1949 and includes more than 1,900 works. The works are mainly on display around the city in offices, institutions and other public spaces, among others.

Osk. Huttunen’s art collection includes 91 works, which Huttunen bequeathed to the city of Kuopio “at the beginning of the Savo Art Museum”. The collection of Leonardo da Vilhu, or Risto Vilhunen, covers more than 2,000 works, mainly drawing and graphics by Finnish contemporary artists. The collection was donated to the Art Museum in 2010. [10] In 2008, the Art Museum received a collection of 150 works by Pekka Halonen, which includes especially Finnish and international painting from the 1980s.

Other collections include the Kuopio Friends of Nature Association and J. Fr. Ash’s collections.

The Saastamoinen Foundation’s works were in the museum’s possession from 1980 to 1999, but due to lack of space, the collection was deposited with the City of Espoo and placed in EMMA in 1999.
