Kuralan Kylämäki

Finland

Kurala Kylämäki is a museum and cultural recreation area owned by the City of Turku , which maintains a rural setting with buildings, gardens, meadows and fields in the 1940s and 1950s . The village has four farms – Iso-Rasi, Vähä-Rasi, Iso-Kohmo and Vähä-Kohmo – and their 26 buildings.

Among other things, the handicrafts and working methods that have shaped the village’s current traditional landscape are maintained. The buildings of Iso-Kohmo in the middle of the hill have been chosen as the core of the farm. In the experimental workshop, handicrafts are extensively maintained from ancient techniques to art workshops. Involving the public and passing on the skills from one generation to the next is a key goal.

Kuralan Kylämäki is an open cultural recreation area and museum belonging to the Turku Museum Center. The museum is open during the summer season, when the public can get acquainted with the main building of the 1950s farm and an experimental workshop presenting the working methods of the past. Kurala is a village of living history, where the museum tells about the past through activities and activities. The hostess of the Iso-Kohmo house works in her living room in her daily work and socializes with her guests while working. The atmosphere of the museum includes sounds and scents that bring the past to this day. At the experimental workshop, the visitor can try their hand at skills themselves. During the winter season, the museum hosts seasonal events. Groups can get guidance in Kurala by appointment, even when the museum is closed. The pilot workshop hosts workshops and handicraft courses throughout the year.
