The Lourosa Zoo: the only ornithological park in the country!
The Zoo officially opened its doors to the public in October 1990, and at that time it was owned by a private individual.
In September 2000, it was acquired by the Municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, in order to comply with the community rules regarding the exhibition of animals to the public, and since March 2001 has been managed by Feira Viva- Cultura e Esporte, EEM since March 2001.
Zoo de Lourosa, as the only park dedicated exclusively to birds in Portugal, and one of the few of its kind in Europe, is a member of the main associations involving zoological parks and aquariums, namely EAZA- European Association of Zoos and Aquariums and AIZA- Associação Iberian Zoo and Aquarium . It is also a participating member in a series of species conservation programs at European and world level, with emphasis on the EEP- European Endangered Species Programs and Studbook’s . The zoo’s bird collection is also part of an international database called ZIMs- Zoological Information Management System .
