Mantes-la-Jolie is a French commune in the Yvelines department and in the Île-de-France region , the capital of the arrondissement . It is a medium-sized city, located on the left bank of the Seine , 57  km west of Paris .

Crossroads of waterways and land, Mantes appeared very early on as a place of commerce and trade, but also as a strategic stronghold on the borders of Île-de-France and Normandy .

There are generally four sectors, each with a characteristic urban shape. They reflect the urbanization of the city from east to west:

  • the city ​​center  : a dense and commercial district;
  • Gassicourt  : a residential suburban area;
  • the Val Fourré  : a large housing complex ;
  • the Hautes Garennes  : a non-urbanized sector, site of a future river eco-district.

Economy

Mantes is home to small businesses working on concrete and chemical processing, but is inevitably drawn into the economic area of nearby Paris.

It is historically and at present a center of musical instrument manufacturing. The well known Buffet Crampon woodwind factory is located in the neighbourhood city of Mantes-la-Ville.

Transportation

Mantes-la-Jolie is served by two stations on the Transilien Paris – Saint-Lazare and Transilien Paris – Montparnasse suburban rail lines: Mantes-Station and Mantes-la-Jolie. The Gare de Mantes-la-Jolie is also served by TGV trains towards Le Havre, and Cherbourg.

Education

The establishments of Mantes-la-Jolie come under the Academy of Versailles and are part of the C zone for school holidays. Primary education (from kindergarten to elementary) falls under the jurisdiction of the municipality , the colleges of the department and the high schools of the region . The town of Mantes-la-Jolie has eighteen nursery schools, thirteen elementary schools, three primary schools, seven middle schools, three high schools and several higher education establishments.

Architectural heritage 

Mantes retains vestiges and buildings from its history, such as the Notre-Dame collegiate church and the Old Bridge , immortalized by Camille Corot .

  • Porte Chant à l’Oie, or rather a vestige that was part of the old fortifications

  • The Old Bridge , which dates back to the xii th  century . It connected the city of Limay Mantes but a part was demolished to build the bridge Peronnet xviii th  century . Only a few arches remain.

Natural heritage 

Green belt 

Inaugurated in early 2009 , the green belt is a set of gentle circulations crossing the Mantaise agglomeration. Its route allows a continuous path from the wood of Butte-Verte (Mantes-la-Jolie) to the park of the Valley ( Mantes-la-Ville ), passing through the international nautical stadium, the Pierre-Bréan pond , Lac des Pêcheurs, Lac de Gassicourt, Quai de la Tour, Quai des Cordeliers, then the banks of the Vaucouleurs . On this signposted route, priority is given to pedestrian and cyclist traffic.

Sports associations 

The municipal sports office (OMS) is an association whose objective is to bring together clubs and Maitais athletes. The Mantaise Sports Association (ASM), created in 1951 , is the largest sports club in Yvelines . We find traditional sports (athletics, badminton, basketball, fencing, artistic and voluntary gymnastics, weightlifting, handball, judo, karate, weightlifting, bodybuilding, etc.) as well as unique sports in the sector such as 4 × 4, ice hockey, karting, figure skating or even off-road motor sports. ASM takes advantage of the Seineand the international nautical stadium Didier-Simond in Mantes-en-Yvelines to allow the practice of rowing, canoeing and sailing.

The club creates and organizes numerous national and international sporting events: the Paris-Mantes march , the Paris-Mantes-en-Yvelines cycling race , the European championships and the Canoe-Kayak World Cup, the French rowing championships.

Other associations allow the practice of additional activities: Baseball club de Mantes , Association Oxygène (boxing), Bougainville sports (football, table tennis, walking and hiking), Association Avalanche (indoor football), Karate club Okinawa , Arts Chinese martial arts of Mantes (kung-fu, tai-chi-chuan and qi-gong), Actions universe sport (bodybuilding and bodybuilding), Taekwondo Val de Seine and the Cercle de yoga du Mantois .

The city center of Mantes-la-Jolie is crossed from north to south by the GR 11 hiking trail , the route of which forms a large loop around Paris , in Île-de-France and in Oise .
