The Montijo District Hospital was born out of a Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Montijo project for the construction of a building for two wards with a capacity of 16 beds.
On May 2, 1943, the first stone was laid, and the Hospital was opened in 1947. Four years later, expansion works began, which were completed in 1954.
On August 1, 1967, the Hospital passed to be called Hospital Concelhio do Montijo. In 1976 it was integrated into the National Health Service and on February 16, 1983 it was elevated to the category of District Hospital, being endowed with the respective basic skills.
