Rakvere Hospital is a contractual partner of the Estonian Health Insurance Fund and a hospital of the hospital network development plan.

Historians have established that medical services were provided on the territory of today’s city of Rakvere as early as 1302, when the city received city rights from the King of Denmark. The first city hospital, which could be considered the predecessor of today’s Rakvere hospital and according to which the story of our medical institution could be told over the years, was established in the city on the corner of Tallinna and Vene streets in 1873. The first inpatient facility had 15 beds.

In 1922, the hospital already had 30 beds and operated mainly in three fields – treatment of internal, wound and venereal diseases. In addition, an outpatient reception for first aid.

In 1932, a new hospital on Vene Street was opened, where the maternity ward also found a place.

Since 1940, the hospital has been used as a polyclinic building (former Rakvere German Gymnasium) at Tuleviku tn 1.

In 1960, the hospital building complex Lõuna põik tn 1 was opened, where the interior, neurology and children’s departments were located in the main building. In addition, the infection department in a separate house.

In 1986, our main building was opened today, which was initially built only for obstetric and gynecological activities. At that time, Rakvere Hospital had a total of 315 beds in different buildings.

In 1991, the surgery department also moved from Vene Street to the new hospital building.

Since June 1997, the owners of the hospital have been the local governments of Lääne-Virumaa, which formed MTÜ Rakvere Hospital . The non-profit association is also the sole shareholder of today’s service provider Aktsiaselts Rakvere Hospital.

In 2013, the current appearance of our hospital changed, an inpatient nursing home with its 48 beds was added, and the territory was tidied up.
