The flat landscape of the Třeboň region is a unique area in which traditional natural values have been preserved and new values have been created by human hands. In many places we can talk about a harmonious landscape, where even today human activities are in balance with nature.
Geological subsoil The
mineral wealth of the Třeboň region lies in high-quality gravel sand deposits (the thickness is up to 30 m). In addition to this raw material, peat was mined in the Třeboň region and is still mined, currently used mainly for spas and also in horticulture.
Hydrology
Probably few places find so many ponds in such a small area. The Třeboň region covers about 500 ponds, most of which were built in the 16th century by masters of pond farming – Štěpánek Netolický, Jakub Krčnín of Jelčany and Sedlčany and Mikuláš Ruthard of Malešov. The largest pond in the Czech Republic is Rožmberk with an area of 489 ha. Other important ponds are Svět, Opatovický, Velký Tisý, Staňkovský and Hejtman. Boaters will then appreciate the ride on the river Lužnice. In addition to ponds and rivers, there are also artificial canals Nová řeka (13.5 km) and Zlatá stoka (47 km), testifying to the craftsmanship of our ancestors.
Fauna
The nature of the Třeboň region is rich in invertebrates (eg butterflies, dragonflies), rare species of fish, amphibians and birds in Central Europe, especially aquatic ones. In the autumn, the local water areas become a refuge for migrating birds, with 10-20,000 specimens staying here. Among the birds you will probably meet here, we must include herons in particular. If a large predator flies over your head, it could be a sea eagle.
Flora
From the point of view of botany, the Třeboň region is significant for the occurrence of water-loving plants. Some of the 400 endangered species that grow here can also be found in arid sandy habitats.
Lovers of tourism, history and nature – especially old and memorable trees will certainly appreciate the new tourist guide Routes for trees and monuments of the Třeboň region, which works on the websitewww.stromytrebonska.cz . So far, six routes have been proposed: Světská, Opatovická, Chlumecká, Rožmberská, Lutovská and the route behind the Třeboň tree witnesses. Visitors to this site will get an overview of old and memorable trees, their history and the areas in which they live.
Nature protection The
Třeboň region was declared a biosphere reserve in 1977 within the framework of the Man and Biosphere program MAB UNESCO. And since 1979, most of the Třeboň administrative district has been part of the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area. It was also the Trebon region defined by the amount of small specially protected areas and sites protected by the Ramsar Convention and Natura 2000.
