Economy

  • steel industry  ;
  • chemistry  ;
  • cement plant  ;
  • river port of Thionville-Illange ( 7 e of France);
  • branch of the Moselle Chamber of Commerce and Industry .

These industries are aging and no longer meet economic needs ( cf. steel crisis of 1970). No solution having been proposed. This reinforces the European character of this city, but underlines its inability to create stable jobs (almost no services) which make it very dependent on the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .

The economy of neighboring countries – Luxembourg , Belgium , Germany – allows the city to remain dynamic. In 2019, more than 100,000 cross- border workers cross the Franco-Luxembourg border every day, where wages are significantly higher than the French average for an equivalent position.

The town is the capital of the eponymous country .

Sobriquets

In the vicinity of Yutz , the Thionvillois were nicknamed d’Stader (the townspeople), in the sense of “proud” or “pretentious”. The bourgeois Thionville passed indeed for very proud people, because they considered high villagers from the surrounding villages.

Concerning the pretty Thionvilloises, they were given the nickname of D’Stader Boken (the Thionville carnival masks).

Places and monuments

Castle of the Counts of Luxembourg

The castle of the Counts of Luxembourg, in Thionville center, has been listed as a historical monument. The sector of the “Court of the castle”, first nucleus of the city of Thionville, seems to correspond to the site of a Carolingian domain, palacio publico , mentioned in 770, where Charlemagne and his successors stayed on several occasions.

From the x th  century, Thionville Luxembourg passes under domination and the counts of Luxembourg are building a castle in one place. The tower Flea, powerful polygonal tower at two sides, built in the xi th and xii th  century, was probably the dungeon. The 140 by 80 meter enclosure, defended by several towers (of which only the “twin towers” and the tower at the back of the court yard remain) is still visible on the city map. This castle of Thionville including barns to store the royalties of the count’s domain and a chapel dedicated to Saint Nicolas (whose location is unknown today) becomes from 1292 the residence of the provost. At the same time, a city developed outside this first enclosure.

From the end of the xiv th  century or the beginning of the xv th  century, noble families have the right to build a house inside the castle (hotel Raville-Septfontaine, hotel Créhange-Pittange , Eltz hotel).

Belfry

The old belfry has been registered as a historical monument since May 27, 1980. The franchise charter granted by the counts of Luxembourg to the bourgeois of Thionville in 1239 authorizes the latter to build an enclosure with a watchtower where there is a lookout (mentioned in 1315). In the xiv th  century, construction of the first belfry, symbol of communal liberties. It is then a set made up of a tower (belfry strictly speaking) and an annexed municipal building, on the street of the old Town Hall, housing among others a courtroom and a hospital.
