Alumina

We have been working for you since 1978

The company Alumina d.o.o., formerly known as Birač a.d., has been engaged in the production of aluminosilicate products since 1978 and has, from its beginnings, represented one of the most important and largest industrial complexes in the region. Over the past decade, we have exponentially developed high-quality products in the field of aluminosilicate chemistry, producing various types of hydrates and alumina, finely precipitated hydrates, more than 10 types of zeolites, silica gel, and liquid sodium silicate. Today, we employ over 1,300 workers and support an additional 300 direct suppliers, more than 20 transport companies, and over 150 direct customers who use our products in a wide range of technologies.

We are proud to say that we are now one of the key international industrial producers of aluminosilicate products in both the European and global markets. We are a fully export-oriented company (over 98% of our products are exported), delivering to 55 countries worldwide, reaching approximately 310 different destinations.

As of January 2024, Alumina d.o.o. is owned by Pavgord d.o.o. Foča, and since May of the same year, Pavgord d.o.o. has become the largest shareholder of the company “Boksit” a.d. Milići. Alumina is Boksit’s main partner under a long-term contract for the supply of bauxite ore, one of the essential raw materials in Alumina’s production process. This strategic partnership ensures business stability and the continuity of our operations.

OUR VISION

Our vision is to be synonymous with a company that constantly sets higher standards both in the field of business, trade and investment, as well as in the field of living, and which not only introduces new habits and trends, but also predicts and creates them.

We strive to be leaders in our industry, relying on high ethical standards and sustainability, while building long-term relationships based on trust and transparency.

Our product portfolio

Aluminium Oxide – Alumina
Alumina is anhydrous aluminum oxide with a crystalline structure obtained by calcining aluminum hydroxide at temperatures over 1000°C.

Aluminium Hydroxide – Hydrates
Within its production program, “Alumina” d.o.o. Zvornik offers hydrated alumina called aluminum (three) hydroxide.

Aluminium Hydroxide – HydrAl
Hydrals belong to the range of dried, ground and mixed aluminum three hydrates with an average particle size in the range of 7 – 100 µm.

Fine Precipitated Hydrates
Alolt Fine precipitated ATH, with the chemical formula Al2O3x3H2O, is white, ultrafine, inorganic, high crystalline material. It is non-hygroscopic halogen free powder. This material has a very low solubility in water and organic solvents. The use of Alolt Fine precipitated ATH is most often based on the thermal decomposition of aluminium hydroxide into aluminium oxide and water (vapor). This endothermic reaction starts at about 180-200°C and consumes energy from the ignition source.

One of the largest markets for Alolt fine precipitated ATH are in sheathing and insulation of wire and cables (W&C), as halogen free flame retardant (HFFR) and smoke suppressant. It has the same role in plasticised PVC where is also widely used. Another very important end application is thermal insulation foams made of PVC/NBR (nitrile rubber) blends. Some examples of other applications are in the production of flooring materials based on PVC, EPDM or other polymers, production of conveyor belts, and as filler in paper industry where, beside the flame retardant role it contributes to paper brightness and ink receptivity.

WFA – Corrundum
Corundum is known for its hardness, ranking just below diamond on the Mohs scale as one of the hardest known materials.

Sodium Silcates – Water glass
Sodium silicate solution (Water glass) consist of oxides of silicon and sodium which are dissolved in water. The production of water glass is carried out by a hydrothermal process, and accordingly these solutions can be synthesized with a SiO2/Na2O ratio of 1.6 to 2.5 with an active component content of 38 to 44%. The solutions are colourless, with increased viscosity and pH values.

These solutions were primarily developed as a raw material for the synthesis of various types of silicates and aluminosilicates, and are also used in the detergent industry, construction industry, cement production, foundry, production of refractory materials and paper industry. Water glass is used in metal, wood, textile processing processes. A significant application can also be in the treatment of waste water. Special formulations of sodium silicate solutions with the addition of additives have increased binding properties, which expands the area of application to the production of adhesives.

Zeolites
In the aluminosilicate program, “Alumina” offers synthetic zeolite type 4A, which is used in the production of detergents.

Silica-Rich Zeolites
The spectrum of special zeolite products includes materials belonging to the types MFI, MOR, etc., synthesized in a wide range of molar ratios.

Silica gel
Silica gel is amorphous SiO2 obtained in the form of granules of uniform size, it is used as an adsorbent of water and moisture.
