Cellars of the Jesuit complex

Czechia

he early Baroque vaulted underground spaces under the rear – southwest wing of the Jesuit complex were the first deeds of the builders in 1654. Above them, a monastery with a prismatic risalit in the middle containing a staircase to the first floor and cellars. The complex foundation conditions on the centuries-old alluvium of the Morava River and the high level of groundwater required the construction of oak piles and wooden gratings. The masonry of the cellar is mostly stone and the space is vaulted with barrel and cross brick vaults of a semicircular profile. The authentic inner face of the masonry and vaults has been preserved.

The architectural and historical breakthrough from 1991 describes the premises as often closed by additional masonry, with partially collapsed masonry of modern partitions, with a load of clay and confusingly stored thrown objects from the parish church. On the north-west side, the continuation of the barrel brick vault outside the foundations of the building to below Nádražní Street is indicated. In the following years, these premises were cleaned, sensitively supplemented with equipment for gastronomic use and opened as the Monastery Wine Bar and Restaurant. The existing staircase was blinded and two new staircases were created to the premises. The inner entrance is from the Reduta lobby, the outer from the park at the business academy.

In the fateful year of 1997, a large body of water did not escape even these underground spaces, and the process of restoration, complicated by the occurrence of stubborn fungi, began again. The reopening took place in 2001.

The premises are part of a complex declared an immovable cultural monument.
