The primary school on Zámecká Street is located in a historic building, which was built for school purposes by the town of Litomyšl in the mid-19th century in the Neo-Renaissance style. She began to study there on June 5, 1873, when she served a real grammar school, which was to prepare young people for craft, trade and industry.
However, the real estate was abolished in 1888. In the following years, they were located in the building of the so-called lower school, mostly boys’, but also a craft school, and on the 2nd floor of the building was from its foundation in 1891 until 1928 a city museum. The building also remembers the location of the library, auxiliary school, a number of occasional exhibitions, school gallery, …. In the years 1943-1945, the building housed people retreating from the front. After the war, the school’s activities were resumed, classes 1-5 also served as a training school for the Litomyšl pedagogical school. Since 1960, the building has permanently only a primary school for young people under 15 years of age.
Of course, the school has changed in appearance over the years. Gradually, the gardens and stone walls disappeared towards the road. In the 1970s, an extension of the school workshop became part of the school grounds, and in the 1980s it was a newly built, separate school canteen building. At present, the main school building is after an extensive two-year reconstruction, which has fundamentally modernized the work environment of students and the premises for teachers. Repairing the ceilings, replacing windows, doors and plaster on the entire building proved to be very challenging. In 2005, the last investment funds were invested in the overall repair of the roofs of the school canteen building. The oldest school building in Litomyšl has thus become fully comparable with other educational institutions in the city after modernization.
For the Litomyšl public, the “school in Zámecká” is associated primarily with the name of the writer Alois Jirásek, who taught there from 1877 to 1888. By far the most famous pupil of the school was, and still is, the world-famous astronomer Zdeněk Kopal. Although he attended only two school years (1920 – 1922), he never missed this time in his memoirs, and this great world science student has always admitted to school and Litomyšl.
