Elixir Prahovo is situated on the border of Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia, on the bank of the Danube River. IHP Prahovo was founded in 1960, first as a superphosphate plant and later different granulates were also introduced.
The founder was the Mining Smelter Basin Bor (RTB Bor), which to solve the problem of sulfuric acid neutralization, built a plant that will turn this ecological and financial problem into a fertilizer. In August 2012, Elixir Group privatized IHP Prahovo, with the necessary investments in the reconstruction of production and storage capacities to ensure the launch of phosphoric acid production and phosphor-based products.
Investing in phosphoric acid production capacities is an important stage in the development of the company Elixir Prahovo and it is positioned on the map of respectable companies in the field of chemical industry.
Elixir Prahovo once again takes the lead in the production of phosphoric acid and mineral fertilizers, and investment plans for the next period are very ambitious.
The ability to independently control the composition of phosphoric acid as a basic raw material component is the key to the success of Elixir Prahovo and defines the development of the company in the direction of further purification of phosphoric acid in feed salt, technical and food quality.
With significant investments in the revitalization of the former giant, Elixir Group provides a strategically important raw material – phosphoric acid, as well as an increase in the total production capacity of NPK fertilizers.
Today, Elixir Prahovo produces 165,000 tons of phosphoric acid annually.
At the beginning of 2017, a new plant for the production of mineral fertilizers of NPK started, with an annual capacity of 300.000 tons.
Products
AlumoFluor
AlumoFluor is an inorganic compound in powdered form and is classified as a top – quality product containing min. 96% of active substance.
AlumoFluor is low-density aluminium fluoride. It is produced using hexafluorosilicic acid, the product extracted during phosphoric acid production process, and neutralizing it with aluminium hydroxide.
Phosphoric acid
Phosphoric acid is a strategic product of Elixir Prahovo. The possibility of independent control of composition of phosphoric acid as the main raw material component makes the key to success of Elixir Prahovo and defines the company’s development towards further phosphoric acid treatment into salts of feed, or technical and food quality.
Phosphoric acid has been produced in IHP Prahovo since 1978 in the dihydrate procedure of the French company “Rhone – Poulenc”. Raw phosphates (calcium fluorapatite) are dissolved by concentrated sulphuric acid on whereby phosphoric acid is produced with 30% P2O5 and calcium sulphate dihydrate (CaSO4*2H20).
After the process of desaturation and decantation the produced 30% acid is concentrated in vacuum evaporation process, until it reaches the quality of max. 54% P2O5. Phosphoric acid is a tribasic acid of oily coexistence, the colour of which varies from light green to brown depending on the type of phosphates, and the same is mixed with water in all ratios.
Mineral fertilizers
The production of mineral fertilizers started in 1960 with the production of a single phosphoric fertilizer – superphosphate. Today, the factory has the potential to produce over 60 different combinations that are the results of scientific achievements in industry and agricultural production. By the beginning of 2017, a new plant for production of mineral fertilizers with the annual capacity of 300,000 tons was put in operation. The production of mineral fertilizers in Elixir Prahovo is based on the latest technological processes, which means that it is possible to produce at customer’s requests mineral fertilizers for the fertilization of any crop culture cultivated on any soil type, based on the soil fertility control.
The production of mineral fertilizers includes various the highest quality formulations of complex mineral fertilizers with a high concentration of nutrients, very uniform granulation and high-water solubility in soil.
These mineral fertilizers fully satisfy the needs of crop cultures for all the elements regardless the specific characteristics of crops or differences in soil quality.

All investments into Elixir Prahovo production capacities, as well as the planned investments in the future, are, among other things, also in the function of environmental protection.
Elixir Prahovo intends harmonise all proposed solutions in the investment projects with recommendations in the reference documents and best available techniques (BREF documents) which are relevant to the production process and activities in Elixir Prahovo, as well as with legal regulations in the area of environmental protection.
Priority activities and projects in the function of environmental protection:
- Installation of more efficient systems for waste gasses treatment in all production plants in Elixir Prahovo, for the purpose of bringing the emission of pollutants to the level of limit values prescribed by the law.
- Adjusting of the existing waste water treatment method for the purpose of harmonisation with the provisions of the Law on Waters and BAT (Best Available Techniques).
- Construction of new phosphogypsum storage in accordance with the reference BREF document;
- Restoration and remediation of the existing phosphogypsum landfill;
- Restoration of the existing tanks and reservoirs for ammonia;
- Restoration of the existing tanks and reservoirs for phosphoric acid;
- Restoration of the existing tanks and reservoirs for sulphuric acid;
- Construction of a new storage for sulphuric acid.
The aim of “Elixir Prahovo” is to harmonize its development and implementation of production technologies with the recommendations in the reference BREF documents, in order to meet all the conditions necessary for obtaining the integrated permit.
