The fort of Santa Tecla is, in terms of size and history, the most important building in Sanremo .

Since December 2014, the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities has been managing it through the Liguria Museum Complex, which in December 2019 became the Regional Directorate for Museums .

Description

It was built by the Genoese in the eighteenth century , along the coast of the city, within an area now used as gardens.

The objective of this construction was not so much that of creating a defensive bulwark of the territory but of controlling, and if necessary opposing, the development of the Matuzian city.

Until recently it was used as a judicial prison; now it is the seat of conferences and exhibitions.

Initially called Fort of San Giorgio, like the Ariston Theater and the Casino , it is one of the main attractions of the city of western Liguria .
