The hospital
HESE, in addition to the good performance recorded in the Benchmarking analyzes prepared periodically by ACSS (where we highlight the excellent behavior in terms of average hospital stay and average preoperative delay), also shows reference activity values, despite all the constraints that you face and that will be described throughout this document. Otherwise let’s see:
- In 2018, there was a significant improvement in most of the HESE production lines. The number of patients discharged from hospital increased by 291 between 2018 and 2019.
- With regard to the number of Surgical Interventions, the growing trend has continued over the years, in such a way that in 2018 almost twice as many interventions were performed in 2008 and 24.8% more than in 2017 (16,290 surgical interventions) , in 2018). Despite the difficulties experienced in terms of human resources in the operating room, with the effort of HESE professionals, we were able to overcome the activity carried out in 2017.
- The External Consultations production line had great development at HESE, significantly increasing assistance activity (158,642 consultations in 2008 to 207,391 in 2018, + 30.7%, corresponding to +48,749 consultations).
- In 2008, the Emergency Department had an influx of approximately 77,500 patients / year. In 2018, affluence levels exceeded 74,000 emergency episodes, a slight increase compared to 2017 (1.2%).
- Regarding the production in Hospital de Dia, in 2018 there was a substantially higher activity than in 2017 (64.67%).
- At the level of the MCDT’s, HESE, in the total of the different areas, performed about 3 million procedures looking abroad only for those whose technical or human resources impossibilities required it.
All this activity is only possible with a team of extremely dedicated professionals who have transformed all difficulties into motivation to better respond to the needs of their users.
Influence area
The area of influence covered by HESE and its population have very particular characteristics. The Alentejo corresponds to about 30% of the territorial area of Portugal, representing only about 5% of the total population. The population density is considerably lower, the area is more than double and the aging rate considerably higher than that of the other hospitals in the group.
The combination of all these characteristics of the target population, which are atypical when compared to the average of the other institutions in the group, creates constraints and difficulties for the management of its resources that do not exist in other institutions.
HESE – Regional Response Institution
HESE already stands out as a reference in Alentejo for the most differentiated areas, namely:
- HESE has a Multipurpose Emergency Service, the only one in the entire Alentejo Region.
- The Nephrology Service is the only one in the Region. His experience in peritoneal dialysis puts him at the national level. It has the only emergency coverage in the Region.
- The Gastroenterology Service also has a daily emergency service, serving the entire area of ARS Alentejo (ARSA), providing diagnostic and therapeutic tests, also collaborating with ARSA in various screenings.
- The Cardiology Service is the only service in the Region that has a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. It also has two rooms (opening of the second room for May 2019) in the Digital Angiography and Intervention Cardiology Unit with 24-hour coverage, allowing the performance of angioplasties, catheterizations, insertion / revision of pacemakers and cardiac devices.
- The Pulmonology Service guarantees the performance of differentiated exams, namely bronchoscopies and thoracoscopy, corresponding to techniques that are only available, in their entirety, at HESE, for the entire Region.
- Neurology has a stroke unit, the only one operating in this way in the Region.
- The HESE Dermatology Service is also the only one in the Region, with strong activity in the field of telemedicine.
- In the surgical area, there are also specialties in which HESE works as a Central Hospital for the entire Region. This is true in Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery and Bariatric Surgery.
