Welcome to Tuzla – The City on a Grain of Salt
Once part of the Pannonian Sea and today a city with 120,000 inhabitants, Tuzla dates back to the Neolithic period. In the Middle Ages, this city was called Salinae, which in the Roman language meant “City of Salt.” At the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th century, the then Croatian-Hungarian rulers named this area Soli. With the arrival of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century, the name Soli was changed to Tuzla (Turkish Tuzla – salt mine). Today, Tuzla is the economic center of the Tuzla Canton/County.
Walking through Tuzla, a must-see attraction is the Slana Banja promenade, located near the Pannonian Lakes, serving as a kind of oasis for athletes and recreational visitors. Tuzla also has several squares and the City Park, which you should visit, enjoy a draft Tuzla Pilsner— a local beer— and soak up the great atmosphere offered by local hospitality venues.
The Museum of Eastern Bosnia is definitely a place that lovers of cultural and historical heritage should visit. Established in 1947, it houses over 30,000 exhibits, some of which are as old as 7,000 years. The biggest attraction in the last four years has been the Zoo, located on the outskirts of the city, in Bosanska Poljana. The zoo is a gift from the Tuzla company Bingo to the city of Tuzla. Featuring the Ringišpil restaurant, the largest indoor children’s playroom and party venue in the city, and more than 350 animals, this park is a favorite spot for enjoying free time with family and friends.
The largest shopping mall in this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bingo City Center, is a place for family fun and excellent shopping.
