Institut za krmno bilje | Institute for forage crops Kruševac

Institute for forage crops Krusevac (IKBKS), is a state research and development institution in applied research in agriculture and animal feed, established as Exemplary farm and garden in 1884. It is specialized in forage crops research since 1959.

Nowadays Institute for forage crops has laboratories, fields, infrastructure and 17 researches with different specializations. Their joint efforts provide multidisciplinary approach to investigate forage crops from different aspects: genetics, productivity, utilization technology and conservation, food processing industry and in environment protection. The fundamental and applied research programs are primarily centred on the development of perennial forage legumes and grass cultivars, from genetic resources to new breeding methods and breeding material, their testing on production and quality, field persistence and resistance on various biotic and abiotic stresses, especially drought.

Also fields of research interest in Institute for forage crops are utilisation and conservation of animal feed on grasslands and arable land, management of sown and natural grasslands, composition and improvement of natural grasslands, forage crops seed production, quality of animal feed, fodder crops pollination with honey bee, using of by-products from fruit processing for composting or animal feed and environmental research including the landscape revitalization.

With a comprehensive research program, mission of Institute for forage crops is to apply research results in order to use all resources to develop and improve efficiency and sustainable livestock production and agriculture overall.

Another group of activities in the Institute are commercial. Institute multiply seed of registered cultivars and process, pack and trade the seed of perennial legumes and grasses. Also production of honey bee products and selected queens is another activity. In its chemical lab researchers of the Institute control the quality of herbage and concentrated feed and chemical composition of the soil.
