International School of Düsseldorf e.V.

Germany

Welcome to the International School of Düsseldorf. ISD has a proud tradition of providing an innovative, holistic education that encourages all students to be successful and responsible in an evolving world. We believe that student well-being is the foundation for success at school and beyond.

Our exceptional faculty work collaboratively to provide a challenging and supportive environment where all students are encouraged to discover their passions and develop their talents.

We work in partnership with parents recognising the important role that families play in the education of their children. Our goal is to inspire all students to exceed their own expectations in becoming confident, creative and compassionate lifelong learners.

As an international community, we celebrate diversity and place great emphasis on creating an inclusive environment. New families are warmly welcomed and carefully supported to integrate quickly into the school community. There is a myriad of opportunities to become involved through our volunteer programmes and an extensive sports and activities programme.

We invite you to experience our warm family atmosphere for yourself and join our quest in leading innovation in learning for a better world.

CO-TEACHING

Through co-teaching, the shared expertise of a team of teachers is used to create inclusive and flexible learning environments. Co-teaching aids in identifying and targeting the individual needs of all students. In order to achieve this goal, ‘best practice’ approaches are synthesized and ‘next practice’ is collaboratively developed.

Learn how our team develops and implements co-teaching in grade 5.

INTERDISCIPLINARY UNITS (IDU)

Many of the problems that we face in our world today are extremely complex. Finding solutions to these issues requires thinking that goes beyond the disciplines. In order to give our students opportunities to consider complex issues and develop creative solutions, we offer interdisciplinary classes in grades 6-8 and interdisciplinary units throughout the MYP. Each of these units is collaboratively planned and in grades 6-8 the classes are co-taught.

In grade 6, students investigate the environmental, social, and economic impacts of mega-projects around the world. In grade 7, students consider what it means to be an ethical consumer and how their everyday choices impact the world. Finally, in grade 8, students learn about food supply systems and determine how they might feed themselves and their community if there were a disaster that disrupted the existing systems.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

From elementary school to senior school, we believe that students learn best when they are happy and feeling secure, and that education is improved when teachers and students work together and share responsibility for learning. Our school environment reflects these beliefs, and we are proud of the enduring positive and cooperative working relationships between students and teachers.

Technology is integrated here at ISD and we aim for every student to be a responsible, global digital citizen who can safely and confidently navigate online social spaces, use digital tools to enhance their own learning and contribute to the learning of others.

We are an international community and our aim is to equip our students with the skills to study anywhere, not to duplicate content requirements of a home education system.

Our curriculum is based on the International Baccalaureate programme. In addition, we offer students the opportunity to obtain a grade 10 and a grade 12 diploma, both of which are unique to the German educational system and recognized by the relevant German authorities. The grade 10 diploma is called “Mittlere Reife” or “Fachoberschulreife”, and the grade 12 diploma is called “Abitur”.
