The geographic position of the city is 42°52′ latitude North and 21°57′ longitude East.

The geographic and traffic position of the Valley of Leskovac is very good. Leskovac is a transit center. Not only very important international roads pass through Leskovac, but also minor roads. The main road connects Western and Middle Europe with Macedony, Greece and Asia Minor.

To the west, along the valley of Jablanica there is a road connecting the valley of Leskovac with the valley of Kosovo (the road Leskovac-Lebane-Medvedja-Pristina).

Via the valley of the Vlasina and Luznica it is connected with the gorge of Pirot, whereas via the valley of the Vlasina with Vlasina and Krajiste, in other words Bulgaria.

In the heart of the spacious and fertile Leskovian valley, fifty kilometres long and forty five kilometres wide, at the foot of the hill named Hisar, in the central part of the valley, lies the city of Leskovac. The Veternica River passes through Leskovac.

The River Južna (South) Morava passes through the middle of the municipality, and the largest tributaries and most important waterways are:
Veternica, Jablanica, Vučjanka, the River Pusta (deserted), and the River Rupska. Leskovac is also surrounded by three artificial lakes, Brestovačko, Barje (reservoir for the water supply of the city), and Vlasinsko Lake.

According to the latest census, the population in Leskovac (in 144 settlements and the city itself) is 162,000. In terms of the number of settlements, the municipality of Leskovac is the most dotted in Serbia. The population per square meter is 158 inhabitants. After Niš, the city of Leskovac with 73,030 inhabitants (according to the census of 2002, including suburban settlements) is the largest in the south of Serbia. The average annual temperature is 11.3° C

Leskovac lies at the altitude of 228m above sea level, situated along with the additional 300 settlements in the fertile valley which covers 2250 sq. meters, and once formed part of the Panonian Sea. The valley is surrounded by Mt. Radan (1409m alt.), Mt. Goljak and Mt. Pasjača to the west, Mt. Kukavica (Coward) (1422m alt.) and Mt. Čemernik (1638m alt.) to the south, and the Babić mountain range (1089m alt.), Mt. Seličevica (903m alt.) and Suva (Dry) Mountain to the east. To the north it borders with the Valley of Niš, and to the south through the Gorge of Grdelica with Vranje-Bujanovac Valley.

The largest river in the region of Leskovac is the Južna (South) Morava River, which flows South to North, and together with the Zapadna (West) Morava River forms the Velika (Great) Morava River. Tributaries of the Južna Morava are as follow:

The Vlasina river, which collects water from Lake Vlasina and flows through Crna Trava and Vlasotince;
The Veternica river, which flows through Leskovac;
The Jablanica river, which springs from the foot of Goljak and flows through Medveđa and Lebane;
the Pusta (Deserted) river, which starts on Radan mountain, fills Lake Brestovačko and flows through Bojnik.

The river Vučjanka, which springs from the Kukavica Mountain, flows through Vučje and is a tributary of the Veternica River. The Kozaračka, Predejanska, Kopašnička and Sušica rivers are also known in the Leskovac region.

Leskovac is surrounded by three artificial lakes, the Brestovačko, Barje and Vlasinsko lakes.

Within these confines, it encompasses an area of 587 sq km. The Kukavica Mountain has natural conditions for the development of mountain and hunting tourism, having in mind the abundance of hunting game, the most important of which are wild boar and roe deer game. Other kinds of game and birds, as well as the presence of predators, dominate in these expanses.

They are managed by the public company “Srbija Šume” by way of the established “Kukavica” hunting grounds, situated at an altitude of 1360 m above sea level.

The average density of game is as follows:
roe deer – 0.35 heads per 100 hectares
gray partridge – 10.44 heads per 100 hectares
wild boar – 0.20 heads per 100 hectares
hare – 9.28 heads per 100 hectares
pheasant – 6.57 heads per 100 hectares
There are six hunting grounds on the territory of the Leskovac municipality, with a total area of hunting compound of 101,035 hectares. The area where hunting is permitted is 89,103 hectares.
In all the hunting grounds combined, there are eight shelters for pheasants, 3,589 sq m in area, and 170 hatcheries for other feathered game, 620 sq m in area. Sixty-five nurseries for hairy game have been built, totaling an area of 839 sq m.
The fishing grounds on the territory of the Leskovac municipality are used for both leisure and commercial fishing, as well as for the conservation on natural resources and the environment.

The fishing waters of this region are as follow:

The Južna Morava River, in its entire course through the Leskovac Municipality. It abounds in fish: nose carp, pike, chub, catfish, sheatfish, bream, carp, asp, perch, gudgeon, barbel. Nose carp and carp are the most plentiful.
The Vučjanka River has barbel and trout in the upper course.
The Veternica River has barbel, chub, and nose carp.
The Jablanica River has barbel, chub, and gudgeon.
The Barje Lake, 30 km from Leskovac, has perch, pike, chub, and carp.
The Brestovačko Lake is rich in carp, sheatfish, chub, carp, and bream
The Slavujevačko Lake has plenty of carp, and white fish.
In the piedmont of the Kukavica mountain, there once were the Jovačka Lakes (more than 10 in number). They disappeared in a massive landslide, and a place of great beauty was created in their stead, unmatched anywhere in the region. At the present, numerous fishermen from Serbia and abroad swarm the surrounding of the lakes at weekends, yet a huge potential remains untapped.

The Leskovac Grill Specialties Festival

The Leskovac Grill Specialties Festival is an event by which Leskovac is recognized. With the number of visitors it falls within the very top of tourist shows in Serbia. During the seven days it lasts, it is visited by more than 450,000 guests. The Grill Specialties Festival is authentic, and the greatest and most visited grill and meat festival in this part of Europe. Every year, in the second week of September, Leskovians at the Grill Specialties Festival set a new record in preparing the largest “pljeskavica” (grilled meat patty) in the world, and it is here that the best “mućkalica (jumble) of Leskovac” is made, popular all over the world.

Leskovac Carnival

The Summer of Leskovac is a traditional, multi-media festival, organiyes at the “Dokić Shop” Ethno-Complex in the very center of the city, starting at the calender begining of summer and lasting until mid July. The program is divided into three segments.

The first consists of sport activities, the second segment is for children, and the third segment of the Summer of Leskovac consists of entertainment and artistic content intended for adults.

In a word, programs are organized which are adapted to summer evenings, and for all ages, in which residents and visitors actively partake.
