Mérignac is a commune in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. It is the largest suburb of the city of Bordeaux and adjoins it to the west. It is a member of the Bordeaux Métropole.

Mérignac is the site of Bordeaux International Airport.

Geography 

Location 

Municipality of the western suburbs of Bordeaux , included in its urban area and its urban unit , Mérignac is located 45  km from the Atlantic coast and, by its population, represents the second largest city of Gironde after Bordeaux .

Lines of communication and transport 

The town is served by the Bordeaux ring road, by rail via Bordeaux-Saint-Jean station or by air via Bordeaux – Mérignac airport . The city is also served by line 601 of the Transgironde buses.

Viticulture

Mérignac is a French wine-growing town in the Graves vineyard. It is one of the Bordeaux wine-growing communes authorized to produce wines: AOC Pessac-Léognan, AOC Crémant de Bordeaux, AOC Bordeaux Supérieur, AOC Bordeaux, AOC Graves and AOC Graves Supérieur.

Green spaces 

Despite vigorous urbanization, a few green areas remain in the town, from which eight landscaped parks stand out. 

  • The Gardens of the Maison Carrée  : include over 9,000  m 2 three terraces, a restored stone staircase and a double row of protected plane trees.
  • The Park Bourran
  • Le Bois du Burck  : 38  ha with free access made up mainly of pines and oaks, bordered to the south by the Le Peugue stream. The wood bordering a vineyard has two fitness trails, picnic areas and a play area.

Culture 

Le Pin Galant is a large performance hall. It offers a program of concerts, plays, various shows and conferences, as well as a 1300 m 2 catering and / or exhibition pavilion.

Mérignac-Ciné , which faces the church in the center, has four rooms accessible to people with reduced mobility.

The Municipal Conservatory , which is based in Capeyron, provides high-level courses in dance, music, theater and visual arts thanks to a team of 41 teachers, from the base to the third cycle.

The main sports club in Mérignac is Sport Athlétique Mérignacais (SAM), with around thirty sections.

The town provides 4 stadiums for SAM including the Robert-Brettes stadium and the Jard stadium, 4 sports halls, 4 gymnasiums, 2 indoor and open tennis complexes, 4 squash and a tennis court, a motor racing circuit, a water sports stadium with two pools and a diving pit, as well as various fitness trails in the parks.

The town also has its Bowling club.
