Classes and Options

Classrooms

The school has 58 classrooms and other facilities, and all classes have state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment. Renovation of the school’s language studio was in progress, and the space is currently used as a service instructor’s space. Some of the school’s classrooms are currently in primary use due to mold damage to the primary school wing. Each classroom in the school building has a name that refers to the subject being taught, in addition to which the premises also have their own color codes. The classrooms are decorated according to their color code inside. Primary classes are named after their teachers (with the exception of 4A). The school also has its own small sand field, which is frozen in the winter. Most of the outdoor sports are organized elsewhere, the most common places being Nojanmaa School and Kyrönniemi Field .

Class division

The school has two parallel classes in primary school and five or six in secondary school. In addition to the school’s own primary school, students from Nätki , Nojanmaa , Moinsalmi and Juvola schools enter Mertala School . Some of the school’s classes are music classes whose number of students ’electives is reduced to music. The winners of the music class will be selected in the spring of the second class by a music aptitude test. The entrants are free to choose whether they want the music class. Music classes are not mixed when you come to middle school, like other classes. You can no longer switch from a music class to a regular class and vice versa. For the semester 2013-14, it is planned that the sixth graders of Nätki and Nojanmaa will be transferred to Mertala.

Options

When coming to the third grade, the student chooses whether he wants to continue crafts until the eighth grade in technical or textile. In the sixth grade, however, twelve hours of shift work are performed. At the same time, it is also chosen whether the student wants to start studying German, which continues until the ninth grade. The selections cannot be changed afterwards. The first actual electives come in fifth grade. In this case, the student is allowed to choose a few courses from about eight options. In middle school, there are about 20 courses on the list. Some courses last until the ninth, some only for a few periods.
