Mladá Boleslav has become a popular location for Czech and foreign filmmakers, not only thanks to suitable interiors and exteriors, but also for its ideal location, which is “a stone’s throw away” from Prague.
The building of the former prison became undoubtedly the biggest “movie star” in Mladá Boleslav. It stands in close proximity to the district court on Republic Square and still retains its authentic appearance, not only in terms of appearance, but also in terms of interiors. The prison building, which served its original purpose in the years 1928–1955, is a labyrinth of corridors with gloomy cells in a period look. The yard and fencing are also in their original condition, so the film crews are often only decently “embellished” with various inscriptions or scenery, which in an instant will create the desired atmosphere.
Czech projects are often created in the Mladá Boleslav prison (eg I Served the King of England, Lidice, Kajínek, Crime in Polná, Cases of the 1st Ward, Black Angels, Bohéma…). Thanks to the unmistakable genius of the loci, however, the place also attracts foreign filmmakers (Hitler: The Rise of Evil, Even in Death Alone, Aftermath…). For example, you could see Tom Cruise, who shot some scenes for the famous Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.
The streets of Mladá Boleslav also appeared in the Casino Royal bond, with Daniel Craig in the lead role. American filmmakers chose Palackého and Husova streets with the buildings of the city theater, today’s Komerční banka, both grammar schools and a sokol hall to shoot some scenes.
The building of the Secondary Industrial School by architect Jiří Kroha, which is today a national cultural monument, came to life in the Czech century, where it was a military barracks.
Even the Boleslav electrical substation on Jičínská Street, where some scenes for Svěrák Primary School were filmed, gained its 15 minutes of fame in the film industry.
Other film locations in Mladá Boleslav and its immediate surroundings include Jičínská Street (Vampire and Ferat), Old Town Hall (Hospital on the Outskirts of the City after Twenty Years, Caress the Cat’s Ears), Kosmonosy (Holy Four) and Podlázky (House in the Suburbs). ).
