Geographically, Novi Sad is in a favourable position. It lies on important transit routes, which provides significant comparative assets.

Novi Sad is connected to the region with road and railway routes as well as waterways. It is in the centre of a highway network connecting Northeastern and Eastern Europe to the Middle and Far East, as well as Central and Northern Europe to the ports of the Adriatic Sea.
The city lies on the European Corridor 10 which connects eight countries on its main route from Salzburg to Thessaloniki, and another six countries with its side routes. The European Corridor 7, or the Danube River waterway, connects Western European countries to the Black Sea. Novi Sad is also connected with the Danube – Tisa – Danube canal system, which enables navigation from the Central Europe to the Black Sea. Novi Sad is located on 1,225th kilometre of the Danube flow. The river is wide here and it forms numerous islands, inlets and sandbanks.
Novi Sad and its surrounding area have always been most attractive for settlers. The city population grew most dramatically after the WWII, when the increase was mainly due to influx rather than natural population growth. The most significant increase in the entire history of the city was between 1961 and 1971, of some 37% in total. The largest portion of the population originates from Vojvodina (56.2%), followed by settlers from Bosnia and Herzegovina (15.3%), and from Serbia proper (11.7%).

According to the last census conducted in 2002, the city population was 299,294 (156,328 of them adults), average age was 39.8 (38.3 for men and 41.2 for women). The number of households was 72,513, and the average household has 2.63 members.
The majority of the urban population are mainly Serbs (according to the 2002 census), and the statistics show that the numbers are on the rise: Serbian population (75.50 %), Hungarian population (5.24%), Yugoslavian population (3.17%), Slovakian population (2.41%), Montenegro population (1.68%), etc. In majority of the city boroughs, Serbian population is dominant, with the only exception of Kisač, where the majority are Slovaks. According to the latest estimates, the city population in 2010 exceeded 370,000.

The central city square – Trg Slobode (Liberty Square) is the starting point of many Novi Sad tourist routes. The City Hall and Roman Catholic Church of the Name of Mary are some of the buildings dominating this square. Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska Street intersected with passages accommodating a multitude of shops, restaurants, craft shops, museums and galleries make the parts of always lively pedestrian zone of the central city core. Pašićeva Street with Zlatne Grede, Grčkoškolska, and Miletićeva Street and Marija Trandafil’s Square makes another important zone of the old core of Novi Sad. This is where you can see the Serbian Orthodox Congregational Church of Saint George, Platoneum, the building of the former Serbian Orthodox Grammar School, Serbian Orthodox Church of Relocation of the Relics of St. Nicholas – Saint Nicholas’ Church, Matica Srpska … Jevrejska Street, with a reputable Novi Sad Synagogue also belongs to the old core of Novi Sad in historical and architectural sense.

Petrovaradin Fortress belongs to the most significant, preserved European fortifications. In addition to being the symbol of the city it is also the witness to multiconfessional tradition that relies strongly on European culture and most attractive tourist zone of Novi Sad. It is currently the area with around one hundred of art studios, restaurants, cafes, museums, galleries… Petrovaradin Fortress is the venue of the EXIT Festival, one of the most significant music festivals in Europe. A baroque Suburbium, a part of Petrovaradin is located in the foothills of the Upper Fortress and Roman Catholic Church of Saint George can be singled out there due to its significance.

The Danube is the main street of Novi Sad around which the cores of Petrovaradin and Sremska Kamenica are grouped on the right Srem bank and Novi Sad of Bačka, on the left bank of the river. The city descended onto the river banks not only with its older streets and most representative buildings, but also with the entire city districts, walking areas, beaches, “čardas” i.e. fish restaurants and weekend settlements. The City beach “Štrand”, weekend resort of Ribarsko Ostrvo and Kamenjar are traditional sites on the Danube for relaxation and leisure. The riparian Danube area accommodates important bird habitats some of which, such as the Special Nature Reservation Kovilj-Petrovaradin Marsh and Nature Park Begečka Jama are of international significance.

Fruska Gora National Park

National Park “Fruška Gora” was established in 1960 and it was the oldest one in the Socialist Yugoslavia. At the surface of around 25,000 hectares covered by the National Park “Fruška Gora” there are protected unique landscapes, valuable geological and geo-morphological units, rare plant and animal species, and forest complexes. The spas of Vrdnik and Slankamen and lakes, among which Borkovac, Sot, Banja-Bruje, Moharač, and Medješ that are important for tourism enrich the contents of the area. Places that belong to most important material and cultural heritage in the territory of the National Park “Fruška Gora” include the complex of Serbian Orthodox monasteries, valuable spatial cultural-historical units, archaeological sites, examples of folk architecture, ethnological heritage, individual monuments of culture, and famous sites such as Petrovaradin Fortress and site of Battle of Vezirac, which could be singled out as tourist sites in the territory of the City of Novi Sad. Fruška Gora is the area of good wines with the following prominent wine centres: Irig, Banoštor, Sremski Karlovci, and Šid.

From the very first breath of spring, when mild slopes get decorated with white snowdrop flowers, all up to late autumn when the entire nature is overflown with the shades of yellow and red colour of the autumn leaves, Fruška Gora is frequently visited by many picnic lovers and tourists.
