The dam was built in 1969, by flooding the Úhlav Valley. The stony dam is 36 meters high, its width is 337 meters. The volume of water in the tank is 1 million cubic meters.

The dam serves as a reservoir of drinking water for Klatovy, Domažlice and Pilsen.

A yellow marked hiking trail leads along the dam and around the west bank of the dam. Due to the protection of the source of drinking water, further movement of tourists near the dam is limited only to marked routes.
