Peace square

Czechia

Litoměřice Square has been the core of the town since the beginning of the first third of the 13th century under Přemysl Otakar I. It has an irregular rectangular shape measuring 75-90 × 180-195 m and is quite large, about 2 ha. It proves the importance of the city in the Middle Ages, when the square served as the main market.

The original waterbed was replaced in 1541 by a wooden pipe and the upper wooden fountain was built, probably in the same year also the lower stone fountain. In the years 1839-59, the whole square and the town were paved. In 1856, after the great cholera epidemic, a sewerage network was built.

Most of the houses on the square are Gothic in core. Inside and on the facades, however, you can see manifestations of all building styles from Gothic to the 20th century.
