Giovanni Da Procida (Salerno 1210 – Rome 1298) was a doctor of the Salernitana Medical School and a politician and nobleman of the Da Procida, lords of the homonymous island from the 12th to the 14th century. In addition to being a diplomat, he did not fail to pursue initiatives aimed at favoring the economy of the kingdom of Naples and Sicily: an example is the establishment of the Salerno Fair and the expansion of the port. The fairs were vital channels of the economy and that of Salerno (Fiera di San Matteo) was the largest fair in Southern Italy. Between 1935 and 1938, in compliance with the decree on “Compulsory insurance against tuberculosis”, the Antitubercular Sanatorium was built under the name of “Giovanni Da Procida”. The building stood in Contrada “La Mennola” on a area of about 5 hectares and could accommodate 260 infirm. The project of the work, published in the local press in 1933, was elaborated by Eng. Silvio Guida, Director of the Technical Office of the National Institute of Social Security. The cost of the execution amounted to about six million lire. For many decades the Sanatorium was under the dependence of INPS until the 1970s when it underwent the transformation from Sanatorium to Hospital. With the establishment of the new cardiology department, the “Da Procida” was no longer a building used only for treating TB. Thus began the transformation of the current Hospital which, around the 80s with the Lg. 833/78 became part of the USL n ° 53 of Salerno. Finally, around the 90s, the delegation law 421/92, allowed the transformation of the old USL into ASL SA2 (Local Health Authority), making it become the “G. Da Procida” in all respects Hospital. With Regional Decree No. 73 of 15.12.2010 the “Giovanni Da Procida” Hospital was annexed to the “San Giovanni di Dio and Ruggi d’Aragona” University Hospital.
