Economy
Businesses and shops
The town’s economic development began in 1830, with the inauguration of the “water station” and the docks. The following decades saw the emergence of powerful metallurgical and chemical industries. This considerable economic boom was to be accentuated until the end of the First World War , still based on the three main branches of activity: chemicals and parachemistry, metallurgy and the energy sector.
Nevertheless, Saint-Ouen still hosts one of the last PSA factories in urban areas. The PSA factory in Saint-Ouen employs around 700 people and is specialized in stamping and assembly of parts.
The Saint-Ouen Docks are a major energy production hub in the inner suburbs. This energy production plant is surrounded by two sites belonging to the City of Paris. One of the land, 4.3 ha, near the Seine, is empty of any occupation. The second land, of 4 ha, facing Saint-Ouen and Boulevard Victor Hugo, is granted to EDF and RTE and accommodates electrical transformer stations which supply electricity to neighboring municipalities, including Paris.
Many audiovisual production companies, advertising agencies, design and structures specializing in art and antiques are already based in Saint-Ouen, as well as in the territory of Plaine Commune. Saint-Ouen also hosts the largest antique and second-hand market in the world: the Saint-Ouen flea market . With 11 million annual visitors, it is the main tourist hub of the city.
