Smederevo fortress
The Smederevo fortress is one of the largest lowland medieval fortresses in Europe and the last major masterpiece of Serbian architecture from this period.
The Smederevo fortress has a lot to offer even to those who are not that interested in history. In summer numerous manifestations and parties take place here and mysticism of this ancient fortress turn them into unforgettable events.
The main city square
….represents the central part of Smederevo. It has triangular shape as well as the Fortress and it is located at the position of the former grand market.
There is the Church of Saint George dominating the Square, as well as the Monument of fallen soldiers in the World War I, the Regional Prefecture building, Contemporary Art Gallery and the famous fountain, as the meeting, relaxation and entertainment spot of both old and young citizens of Smederevo.
The church of Saint George
was built in the period from 1850 to 1854. It was built as the reminiscence of the monastery Manasija and by its volume it is the third monastery in Serbia. It was made of white marble as per the design of Jan Nevola, while the contractor was Andreja Damjanov. The church of Saint George is characterized by five domes and one tall bell-tower at the western side. Above the western portal of the church of Saint George, there is a sculpture of Saint George and a dragon. Biography and iconographic work were made in 1935 by the painter Andreja Vasiljević Bicenko from Kiev, for the iconographic work dated back from the period of church establishment was unfortunately destroyed during the World War I. The columns, as architectural elements of the internal composition, are slender with elegant lines, leaving a massive impression of the indoor space of the church.
Karađorđe’s Mulberry tree
KARAĐORĐE’S MULBERRY TREE is another significant historical site in Smederevo. Under this tree, the Turkish commander Dizdar Muharem Guša handed the keys of the city to Vožd Karađordje Petrović, on November 8th, and thus, symbolically, the city of Smederevo became the capital of Serbia, for the second time in its history.
Karađorđe’s mulberry tree is over 300 years old and is a botanical rarity.
It is located in the city centre near the Grammar school.
