Climb on the green roof of Europe in the Šumava National Park!
Few places in Central Europe offer such a harmonious landscape as the Šumava National Park. The deep forests on the Czech-Bavarian border are so vast as to form the largest forested area on the continent. A combination of centuries-old primaeval forests, crystal-clear glacial lakes, and mysterious peat bogs creates a uniquely poetic place for active holidays at all times of year.
Brief facts about Šumava
Extensive parts of the Šumava Mountains were declared a national park in 1991. Among the three national parks in the Czech Republic, the Šumava National Park is the largest area with its 69,030 ha.
Together with 13,100 ha of the neighboring German Bavarian Forest National Park, it still occupies only about a third of the area of the largest Central European forest complex in the Šumava and the Bavarian Forest. In 1963, the Protected Landscape Area of Šumava with an area of 163,000 ha was declared.
The highest mountain in Šumava is Velký Javor, located at an altitude of 1456 meters in Bavaria, southwest of the town of Bavorská Ruda. With its 1378 m above sea level, Plechý is the highest peak in the Czech lands. It is located on the Czech-Austrian border southwest of Nová Pec.
The Šumava Mountains reach a length of 110 kilometers, a width of up to 20 kilometers and 35 km with the Šumava foothills. The area of Šumava is 1671 square km and is one of our largest mountains.
