The company, now known as Teva, started as a small business in Jerusalem in 1901. A young company named after its pharmaceutical founders Salomon, Levin and Elstein Ltd. it imported medicines and further distributed them using mule-drawn wagons and camel caravans. 

Over the next decades, the company grew rapidly as the demand for locally produced medicines increased. In 1976, the company adopted the name Teva (a Hebrew word for nature) Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.
