The Basic and Secondary School of Carmo started to be called Basic and Secondary School Dr. Luís Maurílio da Silva Dantas from December 11, 2011 by order of the Regional Government of that day in order to honor Professor Luís Dantas for having served for more than 30 years as Chief of Staff to the President of the Regional Government of Madeira.
The Basic and Secondary School of Carmo inherits the name of the patron saint of the parish there. The choice of Nossa Senhora do Carmo as oracle of the parish was due to the suggestion of Father Abel Ferreira, then coadjutor of the parish of Câmara de Lobos, taking into account the fact that there are many Carmelites in the locality.
The sites of Caldeira, Rancho, Serrado do Mar, Caminho Grande e Preces and Fonte de Rocha are part of this parish.
At the time of its creation, this parish (November 24, 1960) had 3700 people, currently it has about 6 thousand.
The School of the 2nd and 3rd cycles of Carmo remained in facilities for a period of two school years, counting from the date of the inauguration (1999/2000). It should be noted that in the 1999/2000 school year the current building was not finished, so the provisional facilities were the “O dolphin” daycare center ?? located in Serrado do Mar.
The current building was inaugurated on 09/24-2000 by His Excellency the President of the Regional Government Dr. Alberto João Jardim. Since December 11, 2001, the school started to be designated as Carmo Basic and Secondary School
In the current academic year, 950 students are enrolled in the 2nd and 3rd cycle and secondary education.
The students of this school stand out for their enormous appetite for the arts, namely music and sport.
