The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava

Czechia

The Theatre in Ostrava was founded in 1919, and is the unmistakeable centre of the cultural, intellectual, and social life of the population of northern Moravia and Silesia. It is the only theatre in Moravia that boasts four artistic ensembles: operatic, theatre, ballet, and musical-operetta ensembles, which perform regularly on two permanent stages.

A theatre with two stages

The stages of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre, based in the Northern-Moravian metropolis of Ostrava, are the Antonín Dvořák Theatre and the Jiří Myron Theatre. Both buildings are located right in the centre of the city. The Antonín Dvořák Theatre is an original neo-baroque building built at the beginning of the 20th century, when the city itself was experienceing a boom, thanks to the wealth of its black coal mines. Over several subsequent decades, the building was reconstructed several times, until it took on the appearance we see today. It is the home stage of the operatic, theatre, and ballet ensembles of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre, and its auditorium, which was renovated at the turn of the millenium, accommodates 517 audience members.

The Jiří Myron Theatre also boasts an almost century-long history, when it was first used as a theatre stage, then as a cinema. In the mid-1900s, the building burned down, and was not opened again until the end of the 1980s. With its capacity of over 600 audience members, it is one of the largest theatres in the Czech Republic. It is the home stage of the operetta and musical ensemble, but it hosts theatre and ballet performances as well.

Theatre in Northern Moravia

Each year, the ensembles together present up to an amazing 500 performances! They present everything from classic Czech and international repertoire to newly-discovered dramaturgy and contemporary works, through experimental works and projects that are often on the borderline of their genres. Its high level of quality ranks the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre among the best in the Czech theatre arts, evidenced both by awards earned at theatre festivals, as well as the interest of domestic and international producers, choreographers, and soloists who make guest appearances here.
