The sugar top

Denmark

In wooded terrain is one of Denmark’s largest hills, Sukkertoppen, with a formidable view of the Søhøjlandet’s beautiful nature. Follow in the footsteps of the Vikings as you embark on the breathtaking ride to the top of one of the country’s most challenging climbs.

Perhaps Denmark’s best view

In the area near Horsens by Bakkelandet and Søhøjlandet you will find most of the country’s highest points. With its 108 meters, Sukkertoppen is not one of the highest, but the view is difficult to match.

The top of Sukkertoppen offers a fantastic view of, among other things,  the most beautiful part of Gudenåen , which offers a wealth of exciting activities, Jutland’s largest lake, Mossø and the forests at Himmelbjerget. The otherwise wooded hill does not have many trees at the top, making it possible to see in many directions.

The sugar top was used by the Vikings

Traces of a fortification from the Viking Age have been found on Sukkertoppen, and it is not difficult to imagine that it has been a strategically good place to seek refuge. From here one could see enemies in the distance.

The characteristics that made Sukkertoppen a strategically good place for the Vikings make it difficult today. The steep sides of the hill are difficult to climb with prams, and unfortunately the ascent is not suitable for people with walking difficulties. But if you are walking well, you can put on your hiking boots and follow one of the paths towards the top.

View of experiences from Sukkertoppen

From the top of the hill you can see some of the area’s best experiences.

At the foot of Sukkertoppen is Klostermølle, which was originally a Benedictine monastery in the Middle Ages. Today there is a large and beautiful building complex, which was previously an active paper mill. Although paper is no longer being produced, the majestic and magnificent buildings are still there and they make a great picnic spot. You can  read more about Klostermølle here .

Klostermølle is located right down to the large lake Mossø , which is among the largest in the country. If you like cycling or hiking, we recommend a trip around Mossø.

Sukkertoppen is located on Gudenåstien Voervadsbro-Emborg , which is part of the trail, which in the long run will follow the entire course of Gudenåen.
