Salons voor Schone Kunsten

Belgium

The Salons voor Schone Kunsten is a museum located in a mansion in the Stationsstraat in Sint-Niklaas .

Collection

The visitor is given an overview of art history from the 16th to the 20th century. The first salon contains several works from the Renaissance and Baroque which, except for the painting Nero by Peter Paul Rubens , belong to the L. Verstraeten bequest. These include a still life by Willem Heda , a self-portrait by Lambert Lombard , work by Sebastiaen Vrancx and Joos de Momper . In the large salon you will find paintings of the Belgian schools from the 19th century, as well as period furniture and other art objects. Louis Artan , Hippolyte Boulenger ,Henri de Braekeleer , Hendrik Leys , Periclès Pantazis , Félicien Rops , Joseph Stevens , Jan Stobbaerts , Alfred Verwee are represented here. Of great importance is the Henri Evenepoel collection , consisting of 9 paintings and some drawings. Works by Guillaume Vogels and a portrait of James Ensor are stylistically related to this. The stairwell features works by Eugène Laermans , Jean Laudry , Leo Engels and Alfons Proost. On the first floor, a selection of the work of mainly Wase artists is displayed .

The collection also consists of luxurious interiors with various period furniture, silver and porcelain. There is also a nice collection of drawings.

Trivia

Every year, the Salons are transformed into the house of the Saint in the context of the City of the Saint. In 2017 this resulted in more than 38,000 visitors.
