Länsmuseet Gävleborg

Gävleborg County Museum is a foundation that works with cultural heritage and art in Gävleborg County . The museum business really began in 1933 when Philibert Humbla was employed as county superintendent by Gästrike-Hälsinge Hembygdsförbund for „homeland care tasks“. Seven years later, in 1940, after a donation from the Gävle family Rettig , Gävle Museum was inaugurated „a museum for art, furniture and the art industry“. The museum displayed the Rettigska collection of arts and crafts, as well as another large number of works of art collected by Philibert Humbla. The museum building was designed by city architect Sven Wranér and would, according to donor Antonie Rettigswishes, as close as possible to her sister’s palace – the von Plessenska palace in Copenhagen (today Domus Medica on Kristianiagade 12).

To mark the regional aspect, the assignment was expanded in 1978, whereby Gävle Museum changed its name to Länsmuseet Gävleborg. Today, the museum owns a large collection of Swedish art and works with cultural heritage issues on many levels – in building maintenance, archeology, cultural tourism and pedagogy. For example, the museum’s work within the world heritage Hälsingegårdar and the cultural tourism project Järnriket Gästrikland . The museum works with advice and various projects and assignments both in schools, for private individuals and in collaboration with associations and companies to highlight the county’s cultural heritage in various ways. The museum has large collections of objects. In addition to art, ceramics, photography, wallpaper, furniture, archeological objects and textiles can be mentioned.

In the museum building at Södra Strandgatan 20 in Gävle, there are exhibitions, textile study rooms , VR rooms , fact rooms, cafés, shops and studios where the museum conducts creative activities.
