Oasis of Porto

Italy

The Porto Oasis has a mosaic of environments ranging from holm oak scrubland and pine forest to stone pine, rows and individual trees of mature deciduous oaks, plane trees and eucalyptus trees, without forgetting that the environment of greater size and importance it is undoubtedly the port mirror.

Among the breeding species along the banks of the Port of Trajan, the most characteristic is undoubtedly the Great Crested Grebe, which, within the Roman Coastal State Nature Reserve, finds its habitat of choice here and has the largest number of pairs. Still nesting are the mallard, the little grebe, the coot, the moorhen, the kingfisher and a large colony of wild geese, about a hundred, which amaze visitors with noisy collective flights, all descendants of some pairs reared in loco a few years ago.

The Oasis extends around the lake to whose extraordinary historical-archaeological importance is now also added a great “environmental” value. It is a privileged stopping point for migratory aquatic birds on their long flights between the Mediterranean and Nordic regions.130 species of birds that frequent the Oasis have been registered.

Among others there are numerous species of ducks, grebes, grebes, black-winged stilts, gray herons, coots, cormorants, gulls and sea swallows that frequent the lake in large numbers at different times. Also noteworthy is the fish fauna, where sturgeon, perch, pike, eel, mullet, catfish and carp are represented. The Oasis also hosts a colony of fallow deer. Finally, the luxuriant presence of flora should be noted, represented by native tree and shrub species: oaks, plane trees, pines, ash trees, holm oaks and eucalyptus, now integrated into the environment after the reclamation of the early twentieth century.
