Krasnal Piernikarz (Gingerbread Dwarf)

Krasnal Piernikarz (Gingerbread Dwarf)

Piernikarza Dwarf is the guardian of Piernikarnia Wrocławska in 5 Kurzy Targ Street in Wrocław.

Residents of Grodno Wrocławskie, as well as tourists frequently visiting our settlement on the Odra River! We are happy to inform you that the ancient Piernikarz Dwarf has been found at 5 Kurzy Targ Street at Piernikarnia Wrocławska – Wrocław Gingerbread House! You should know that Lower Silesia was famous for gingerbread centuries ago, and the first written records of gingerbread making on present-day Polish soil date back to 1293.

At that time, in the nearby town of Świdnica, an article was written about the local gingerbread makers: “piperatas tortas facientes”, i.e. ‘making spicy cakes’. And so began the story of gingerbread from Lower Silesia, which Piernikarz Dwarf tells us about. Later Wrocław became the main centre of the Lower Silesian gingerbread craft. The tradition of gingerbread baking in Wrocław dates back to the 16th century. The gingerbread makers of Wrocław became independent in the 18th century, forming their own guild.
The Lower Silesian gingerbread tradition was alive in Lower Silesia until the mid-20th century, when it disappeared due to the migration of the population as a result of World War II. And back to the miraculous appearance of the Dwarf who told us the above story. It goes like this… a long, long time ago Piernikarz Dwarf ate so much gingerbread and drank so much honey that he fell into a long, blissful sleep.

He dreamt of gingerbread with chocolate, nuts, fruit and probably even with jam. You should know that Piernikarz Dwarf can never have enough gingerbread, and even when he is deeply asleep, he sweetly dreams about gingerbread. During his long sleep, he became so hungry that he was awakened by the aromas coming from our Gingerbread House. He ate all the gingerbread we had and, in gratitude for the feast, decided to stay with us and restore the tradition of gingerbread baking in Wrocław.

Parrots are not locked in cages; the whole PARROT HOUSE is their home.

Four Denominations District

Four Denominations District

The Four Denominations District – a place of meetings, dialogue, mutual respect and… numerous culinary experiences.

The Four Denominations District (Dzielnica Czterech Świątyń) is located in the centre of Wrocław, right next to Rynek. It consists of the area between the streets Kazimierza Wielkiego, Św. Mikołaja, Pawła Włodkowica and Św. Antoniego.

It is not a regular, urban district but the unique atmosphere of the place caused that since 1995 it has been called Four Temples District, Four Denominations or Mutual Respect District. Its unique character derives from wonderful sacral architecture. In 300m, close to each other there are: Orthodox church of Nativity of Theotokos, church of St. Anthony of Padua – a Roman Catholic temple, Synagogue pod Białym Bocianem and an Evangelical church of Divine Providence. In 1996 the Council of the Mutual Respect District was created in order to encourage cooperation between the religions.

In 2005 the temples were connected with a “cultural route” and the area between them was included in the urban development plan. The District is considered a historical monument. On 29 November 2012 on the corner of the streets Kazimierza Wielkiego and Św. Antoniego the Cristal Planet statue was exhibited. The sculpture created by Ewa Rossano, an artist from Wrocław, became another symbol of the District.

The Four Denominations District hosts many cultural and educational events. The Synagogue is a place of special meaning. It hosts many artistic events, every summer there are concerts and exhibitions organised under the name “Summer in The White Stroke Synagogue”.
A similar function has the nearby cinema Nowe Horyzonty. It is the first cinema in Poland devoted to artistic films and hosts the most important film festivals in Wrocław. New Horizon Festival and American Film Festival became popular not only among Polish audience but also abroad.

Multiple restaurants, cafés, pubs and music clubs situated in the Four Denominations District (for example in the beautiful patio of the Synagogue, surrounded by old walls) make it one of the most magical meeting place in Wrocław.
