How to get to the Stroppia waterfalls, the highest in Italy
With a jump of 500 meters, they are the highest waterfalls in Italy: but to see them you have to go there in spring, as they disappear in summer.
Despite being little known, the Stroppia waterfalls – which arise in the glacial valley of Vallonasso di Stroppia – jump almost 500 meters, rightfully deserving the primacy of the highest waterfalls in Italy . They reach the Maira Valley, flow into the waters of the homonymous stream, and reach their full beauty in late spring . Then it “disappears” in the summer, when the level of the Niera lake (above) drops.
From the quaint village of Chiappera you start pedaling on asphalt turning right, ignoring the detour to grange Collet and reaching the beginning of the dirt track just after the bridge over the Rio Maurin. Proceed in this direction for 600 m until you reach a small lake on the right which you skirt along, continuing by now in sight of the imposing “cascate di Stroppia” whose jet is visible from early May and late June. At an altitude of 1687 m you reach the turning point of the itinerary and return along the orographic right of the stream until you rejoin the outward route and return to Chiappera. If you want to continue pedaling, you can continue on the road, downhill until the second bend, where you take the dirt road, ignore the following deviation on the left and go up to the panoramic point “La Crocetta”. From here you proceed downhill on b.ta Saretto from where you return to Chiappera on asphalt, along the artificial lake. At the first bend, retrace the dirt road of the outward journey, this time turning left; a final ramp leads into the town.
