Hungary

Sümeg is a town in Veszprém county, Hungary. Sümeg is mostly known for Sümeg Castle. It is 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of Lake Balaton.

Sights

  • Sümeg Castle : The castle is a cone-shaped bottom Cretan aged limestone hill at the top of 270 meters above the sea level, the city’s average of 180-200 meters height above sea level rising out. Basic Drawing polygonal protracted north-south direction, 125 meters long and 80 meters wide, towering inner lakóvár, garnished with a steep mountain side, stretching down the page tarisznyavárral . The castle regularly hosts castle games and knightly tournaments.
  • Prehistoric Mine – a protected flint quarry where radiolarite was mined in prehistoric times , can be visited as a museum.
  • Franciscan Church and Monastery, built in 1653 in Baroque style. It has been a famous pilgrimage site since 1699 .
  • The birthplace of Sándor Kisfaludy ( 1772 – 1844 ), built in the 18th century , is now a museum.
  • Episcopal Palace : Built between 1748 and 1755 , it is an outstanding work of Hungarian Baroque architecture.
  • Kisfaludy Restaurant was a meeting place for intellectuals in the Reformation. Here was the second casino in Hungary. Today it operates as a restaurant, confectionery and hotel (www.kisfaludy.eu).
  • Sümeg Parish Church , built in late Baroque style with braid, empire and rococo elements, was framed in 1757 with frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch . This church – by analogy with Michelangelo’s Renaissance Roman masterpiece – is also called the Rococo Sistine Chapel.
  • Cemetery chapel, built in late Baroque style in 1816 . Around it, a series of late Baroque, Empire, Braid and Classicist tombs preserve the Kisfaludys, Darnays, Eitners, Ramasetters, Bogyaians, Czechs, etc. the memory of nobles, craftsmen and ordinary citizens.

  • The nature reserve is Várhegy and Mogyorós hill.
  • Castle stable, along the road to the castle, today equestrian center. In one of its rooms you can see the Hussar Museum.
  • Tarányi Castle
  • Statue of St. Ladislaus: It was erected in 1990 near the Franciscan church in Sümeg. The work is the work of sculptor Sándor Oláh . It was inaugurated in 1938 .  He first stood in the Orczy Garden , Ludovika Academy , and was removed in 1945 .
