Gastronomy

Túrkeve also boasts two locally sourced dishes:

  • The sheep stew from Kevi: Although sheep stew is made elsewhere, and not only in Nagykunság , but also in other parts of Hungary , Túrkeve is unique. Kevi mutton stew is made together with other parts of the mutton after scalding the head and legs of the sheep, which is what makes it so special. Professional and amateur chefs from all over the country flock to the Kevi Sheep Festival in Túrkeve in May every year to compare their knowledge with the locals and to compare different sheep stews from different landscapes.
  • The Mixed Mix: The twisted mixer is only real if it is hand-twisted and does not contain additives of artificial origin.
  • Of course, traditional pastoral and peasant dishes were also prepared in Túrkeve, so slambuc, pötyő and watercress are no strangers to the few.

Economy

Agriculture

The most important economic feature of Túrkeve is the arable land, which has a medium loess capacity and is highly water-retaining. Prior to the change of regime, successful land reclamation works were carried out in large areas . Today, cereals, mainly wheat , barley , rye and oats, are produced in the town.

The city’s animal husbandry has been marked by sheep farming since the beginning of time. In addition, pigs, poultry and cattle are also important. Dozens of pigs were kept in almost every house in the 1960s and 1970s .

Although the landscape is not conducive to the cultivation of most fruit varieties, plums and apples are exceptions, as several varieties of these two fruits grow in this area.

Industry

The 17th site of the national large company (AFIT) car and machine repair company used to operate in Túrkeve, which was closed down shortly after the change of regime. Nowadays, with the investment of private capital, a serious investment has taken place and is still taking place, the production and supply of car parts to renowned car factories.

Mineral resources

Utilizable mineral and mining resources are natural gas , thermal water , clay and (to a lesser extent) sand . Water resources are abundantly available from river waters with abstraction, as well as stratified and deep waters.

The settlement is characterized by significant geothermal energy, which is currently being exploited, and the construction / tender of a gas-fired power plant is being planned, which will have a beneficial effect both economically and environmentally on the people living here.
