Szeged specialties
In the history of Szeged, characteristic unique features related to Szeged have developed, in connection with which the world of that time got to know Szeged and the people of Szeged far and wide, even in the centuries before newspapers, news and even television. At the earliest, the city had significance through the transport of salt, which has enjoyed duty and tax exemption by royal decree since the 14th- 15th centuries . King Matthias gave the city permission to hold a national fair, which made Szeged one of the main centers of trade at that time. Because of all this, the importance of the city has grown steadily over the centuries. At first, through its horse fairs and then the fish river Tisza, the fish trade also made the city famous. Over time, through its lively dried fish, tobacco and grain trade, it has become a coveted marketplace for traders in distant lands. Its industrial development is well illustrated by the fact that in 1870, at the time of the censuses, 4,767 craftsmen were working in the town. Fishermen, millers, carvers, shipbuilders, sawmill and shingle craftsmen, wheelbarrows, soap makers, tile burners… etc. Through the masters of some industries, some products were a real Szeged specialty. Today, these traditions are beginning to fade, although Szeged has been known for a long time through them.
Szeged slippers
For many centuries, one of the characteristics of home-made craft was the women’s slippers with red butterflies and knocking heels, or as many called at that time the “Szöged slippers”, which had long been an important accessory of Szeged folk costumes. Traditionally, families made slippers from father to son with many motifs and decorations, but with the same structure, in a way that withstood enduring heavy use.
The tarragon of Szeged
It belonged to the specialty of the gastronomy of Szeged for a long time, even among those who loved their stomachs. Of course, this is not the same as the pasta factory’s “shot” used in canteens in our childhood, as the original Szeged targony was a home-made dry pasta typical of this region, which was never conceivable without its brown-roasted tarragon or beef pepper. The tarragon matching the paprika, the snail pasta for the soup, the noodle pasta for the lebbencs were all important components of the dishes typical of the old traditional Hungarian and Szeged regions. Today, pasta factories shed similar products produced according to the standard, but those who have once tasted the original are always looking for the taste and texture that was so well made in Szeged once and is still made today.
Szeged house soap
Szeged was an economic activity with a long tradition of soap making. It had a favorable potential for soap production, due to the size of the larger saline lands around the city, because one of the main constituents of detergents was the saline itself for many centuries. Once upon a time, only the home industry produced soaps, laundry soaps, which were among the goods sought. Industrial soap production, gradually pushed artisans out of this market as well, and over time only the production of laundry soap was an additional income of some family businesses, this branch of handicraft industry slowly withered, although for many centuries this Szeged specialty provided a livelihood.
