Of the nearly forty mills town Schiedam and its surrounding land has known were there mid 20 e century only five left. Fortunately, the tide turned in the decades that followed and, partly thanks to a group of active volunteers, interest and appreciation for the mills arose again. The Schiedamse Molens Foundation emerged from this.

Since its establishment in 1981, the foundation has been committed to the management and preservation of the windmill heritage in Schiedam. The objectives of the foundation are:

Taking care of the maintenance of the windmills • Preparing, maintaining and operating the Schiedam windmills
• Stimulating interest in the Schiedam windmills
• Advising third parties with regard to the design and operation of windmills outside Schiedam
• The coordination of all windmill activities and their policy implementation

In the first period after the foundation of the foundation, much attention was paid to the necessary minor and major maintenance and the restoration of the mills. The Stichting Restauratie Werkplaats Schiedam played a major role in this, as did a group of enthusiastic volunteers.
In the years that followed, two extensive projects were realized. The first thing to do was rebuild the De Palmboom windmill, of which only a stump remained. This mill has not only been rebuilt, but has also been converted into a museum mill with the name De Nieuwe Palmboom. Visitors were introduced to the operation of a mill and the relationship between the Schiedam malt or burner mills with the gin industry.
In 1996 the De Walvisch windmill was hit by a fire. Because a stone mill hull works like a chimney, nothing remained of the interior. Thanks to the joint efforts of funds, municipality, residents and companies of Schiedam, this striking malt mill on the Westvest has been restored.
In 2018, the museum function moved from windmill De Nieuwe Palmboom to windmill De Walvisch, where our windmill shop is also located. The mill is visited by tourists from all over the world. The operation of the museum part has been in the hands of the National Jenever Museum, which is also located in Schiedam, since 2013.

Around the turn of the century, the first plans arose to rebuild one of the original mills on the east side of the old center. Ultimately, the choice fell on De Kameel windmill; a burner mill from the first construction period beginning 18 e century with a striking grotto allowing small boats in the mill could sail to load and unload. Despite the economic crisis that broke out when fundraising started, the mill was officially opened during National Mills Day in 2011.

Parallel to the building plans for De Kameel, there was a desire to restore the Babbersmolen, the only remaining polder mill on Schiedam’s territory. Only the bare windmill hull remained of this mill on the historic Poldervaart. This restoration was also completed in 2013 with a lot of patience.

For the time being, this means that the construction activities have ended. In the coming years, Stichting De Schiedamse Molens will concentrate on the maintenance of its mill stock and the development and exploitation of activities on the mills. She prefers to do this with activities that do justice to the nature of the mill and offer added value to society. In this way residents and visitors of the city can get to know the mills and enjoy this beautiful cultural heritage for years to come.
