A Brit with ‘vampire disease’ reveals how he lives: “I can’t go in the sun, the pain starts immediately.”

His condition is colloquially known as 'vampire disease'. He mentions that there are treatments that would help him stay in the sun longer, but his health insurance does not cover them.

“I suffer from erythropoietic protoporphyria. It’s a rare genetic disorder that prevents me from exposing my skin to the sun. This disorder causes liver damage in some patients, including myself. To explain briefly, if I am directly exposed to the sun for more than two or three minutes, unbearable pain starts, lasting a week. When I am in that state, I can’t dress, drink, eat, or tolerate light in the room,” began his confession on Reddit, one anonymous Brit.

He says he had problems with employers in the past who required him to come to the office, but he has been at the same job for eight years now and they are accommodating. He works in the IT sector during the day and writes technical books at night. He also mentions that ordinary glass doesn’t protect him from the sun, so he has to get special windows.

“Due to people’s negative reactions, sometimes I don’t want to leave the house. They have spat at me, insulted me, got in my face… Some think I do it for religious reasons,” wrote this Brit, who received great support from the Reddit community.
