Abja Gymnasium

School history

  • Education began in Abja in 1812. For decades, this took place in rural schools. These were the schools of Kaidi, Niitsaadu, Vanamõisa and Pussi. In 1861, the Russian Orthodox Parish School was added to Penuja. In 1912, the teaching of children began in the small town of Abja-Paluoja.
  • Decree of the Director of Livonian Folk High Schools of October 3, 1914. To allow the school society “Idule” to open and maintain a two-class school (5 primary schools) on the basis of special statutes.
  • In 1919, the unification school was reformed in Estonia. After that, the primary schools of Kaidi (until 1934), Abja-Paluoja, Penuja, Laatre and Pussi operated in the present Abja municipality.
  • Abja-Paluoja Primary School worked in the former tavern building. In 1940, a proper school building was built. In the same year, the school was transformed into a gymnasium. From 1945, the name of the school was Abja Secondary School. The first flight ended in 1946.
  • From 1949 to 1998, teaching also took place in classes I – VII with Russian as the language of instruction (later until grades I – VIII and I – IX).
  • The extension of the school was completed in 1964. The number of students in the school was constantly growing, as the smaller schools in the area were closed: Vana-Kariste school in 1971, Halliste school senior classes in 1972, Penuja school in 1974, Kosksilla school in 1980. The largest number of students was in 1975 – 718. There were 31 class sets.
  • In 1970, the transition to the classroom system began at the school. In 1972, the classrooms of Abja Secondary School and the teaching carried out in them were recognized as worthy of the 3rd place in the republic.
  • The school had outstanding achievements in shaping its surroundings. Out-of-class work included a good level of sports, folk dance and organization of theater days. In the 1990s, they participated in a unique school movement. In 1993, remedial training was introduced. From 1995, those who wish will receive training for border guard work, and from 2003 in the field of internal security.
  • In 1998, the school was renamed Abja Gymnasium.
  • The school underwent a major renovation in 2001-2003. and in 2007. The dormitory building was completed in 2006. In the same year, a child with home care difficulties is also taken to study in other rural municipalities of the county.
  • 75 flights have been completed by the gymnasium (high school). There are 2042 graduates. 52 students have graduated with a gold medal and 42 with a silver medal.
