African Museum of Namur

Belgium

Founded in 1912, the African Museum of Namur (MusAfrica) constitutes a rich and astonishing cultural institution of the Belgian museum landscape. The Museum thus sees itself as a place of memory, but also as a place of meeting, debate, training, research, awareness raising and social contact. The primary mission is to be a place of living culture.

Collections

The African Museum of Namur brings together a collection of African objects, mainly of Congolese origin, including weapons, furniture, everyday objects, musical instruments and ritual objects. It also presents objects of European origin relating in particular to the military campaigns during colonization at the end of xix th  century against the Arab slave on the east coast of Africa and then during the two World Wars, against the German army or their allies. Finally, the collections include mineral and animal specimens. The vast majority of the objects in the Museum are from before the period of Congo’s independence in 1960.

The Museum has a library comprising more than 20,000 works on Africa and more specifically on the Congo, in several languages, as well as a rich collection of documents, postcards and photographs. It also has a large number of geographical maps from different eras, relating to Africa and the Congo, as well as a fine collection of works by Africanist and Congolese painters and sculptors.
