Founded in 1980, the Municipal Gallery of Amadora was considered one of the pioneers in gallerist activity at the municipal level. In 1991, she was awarded by the Portuguese Society of Authors, with the trophy of the best Municipal Gallery in the scope of Plastic Arts and, in 1995, with the prize of the best National Exhibition attributed by the art critics of the Academy of Arts, with the painter’s exhibition António Inverno.
In 1999, it was renamed Artur Bual Municipal Gallery, in honor of this painter, who introduced gesturalism in Portugal. The cultural initiatives developed over two decades, allowed the creation of a Municipal Collection of Works of Art, which includes the most respected names in the visual arts, such as Artur Bual, Costa Camelo, Cruzeiro Seixas, Francisco Relógio, Manuel Cargaleiro, Laranjeira Santos, Luís Badosa, Margarida Santos, Angel Orcajo, Rogério Ribeiro, Theys Willemse, António Carmo, Paula Rego, José Pádua, Jacinto Luís, Guilherme Parente, among many other artists.
In addition to organizing exhibitions, Galeria Municipal has created, over the years, a set of innovative projects that give the city of Amadora an image of artistic and cultural dynamism. More recently, it promoted the edition of 0 Figura (honoring figures such as Cruzeiro Seixas, José Garcês, José Ruy, Laranjeira Santos, Victor Lages, José Luís Ferreira, José Pádua, Gil Teixeira Lopes, Fernanda Easter and Marina dos Santos) Open Air Sculpture, Amadora Contemporary Art Fair, Small Format Art Fair, among many other projects that enrich the municipality’s cultural offer.
