Basílica da Estrela

The construction of the Basilica da Estrela and the barefoot Carmelite convent, which has been occupied by public services since 1885, began at the end of the 19th century. XVIII as a result of a vote of D. Maria I, with the intervention of architects Mateus Vicente de Oliveira and Reinaldo Manuel.

The basilical church, with a single nave and Latin cross plan, is one of the most brilliant achievements of late Baroque, with the inclusion of elements already neoclassical. The façade is crowned by a triangular pediment framed by two bell towers with clocks, and decorated with monumental statues and relief figures alluding to the mystery of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Inside, the main altar stands out, with an altarpiece of the same theme, and also the painting A Ceia, by Pompeo Battoni, or the sculptural group of the Eucharist, designed by Machado de Castro (as in the case of sculptures from the outside). The classification includes the tombs of D. Maria and her confessor, in a marble funeral monument, with a neoclassical character. S
